Inspiration by Gwyneth - January

Good Morning Everybody!

The new year has arrived!  Hope it is a good one for all of you.  I also hope that you had all the crafting goodies, and other stuff, that you wanted for Christmas.  If you did I'm sure that you are still having fun playing.

This month my inspiration creation to show you is a "Llyfr Pob Math O Bethau" - a "Book For All Sorts Of Things".  With a notebook, ball point pen, plain cardstock, and pocket inside, it can be used in whatever way the recipient wants. So if they want to keep it as a notebook they can, or doodle, or draw, or stick in photos, or pop keepsakes in the little pocket, or cut out things they want from a catalogue to stick in - well they can - it's not tied to being anything in particular.

Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
Items from the "Cinnamon Spice Collection" available - here - in the store.

Consumables:
250gsm Super Smooth cardstock, A5 notebook, Seam binding, 2 clip rings, 2 sheets of cardboard for cover, Quick grab glue, A5 white 300gsm cardstock, ball point pen
Equipment:
Hougie Board, Scissors, Crop-a-dial, 2 hole paper punch

This is what I did:
Firstly I took the notebook and cut out two pieces of cardboard a bit larger than it.  I then used My Craft Studio software to do some layering and some panels using items and backgrounds from the Cinnamon Spice Collection, printing everything off once I was satisfied with the layout.

I used quick grab glue throughout to allow for a little movement time before it grabbed and held.

One panel was put on the front of the notebook, I then scored along the lines of the notebook front and folded the edges over, cutting off the corners before glueing in place and then glueing the 1st lined page over to hide the folded strips.

For the front and back I covered them both with the same background panel, again scored around the edge and cut the corners, before folding the sides over.  I cut two panels from another background from the collection just a smidge smaller than the front and back and stuck these inside to cover the folded over strips, putting a length of seam binding under the inside panel of the back before sticking it in place.

I punched holes in the A5 cardstock and placed one of these over the back cover where I wanted it to be and drew through the two holes onto the cover.  I then used the crop-a-dial to first punch holes through the cover then to set the hole washers in place.  I did the same for the front cover, using the back cover hole positions as a guide.

I cut a panel of cardstock and scored in at 1cm, 1.5cm and 2cm on three sides.  These formed the sticking panel and gussette of the pocket that was stuck inside the back cover.  The covered notebook was stuck inside the front cover.

A second panel was stuck onto the front, putting one end of a length of seam binding underneath it before it was put in place.  I finished off the front with a flower printed and cut from the same collection.

The "book" was then constructed, clipping everything together with the rings and putting the ball point pen inside, before adding two short lengths of seam binding as decoration to the rings and tieing the lengths at the open side.

Inspiration by Gwyneth - October

Good Morning Everybody!

Hi Everybody!  It's time for another "Inspiration by ..." post from me.  This time I've gone away from cardmaking and digital scrapbooking and decided to simply decorate a canvas with a prayer, papers and a simple digi-stamp of a loaf of bread.  With string attached to the back it is created to hang in a dining room or kitchen..
Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
    • "Bread Pack"
    • "Simply Soft Collection -Papers"
    Consumables:
250gsm, Super Smooth white cardstock; Canvas board; Brown Watercolour Pencil; White Acrylic Paint; Quick Grab Wet Glue.
    Equipment:
    Scissors; Paint Brush.
    .
This is what my canvas looked like:

The prayer is in Welsh and a simple translation of the verse is:
Oh Father, as a contented family
we come, and thank you anew,
because from your hand there comes each day
    our food and our joy.
    Amen
This is an angled view of the canvas showing the little dimension introduced:

    .
    Method:

I started by printing out an assortment of the papers at different sizes, as well as printing out the digi-stamp of the sliced rustic loaf at around 2" in length.  I used a brown watercolour pencil to colour in the digi-stamp and then cut it out.  I cut out the panels of the papers and after laying the largest towards the top of my canvas I started playing around with positions of the rest and tore the edges of anything that wasn't along the outside of the canvas.  I used quick grab glue to stick everything onto the canvas, leaving a small white edge of the canvas all the way around.  I opened one of the backgrounds in My Craft Studio and re-sized it to the size I wanted before typing the prayer in a layer over the top.  This was also printed out and cut.  I shaped/bowed both the prayer and the loaf of bread and used the same glue to attach these at their left and right hand sides to the front of the canvas, holding for half a minute until the glue grabbed and held the item with the shape I wanted.  I then took a dry paint brush and some white paint and dry brushed very lightly in from the edges all the way around to soften the outside edge of the paper panels.

And that is it from me for today.

    Inspiration by Gwyneth - September

    Good Morning Everybody!

Normally, when I do a lot of digital design construction, with elements from a kit, I still print them out at the end and usually do a bit of hybrid crafting with the design I've come up with.  But today I decided to go a different route, I decided to take one kit from the store, and use it to create several digital layouts.  The kit I chose had an old style photo within it, so I decided to use that as a focus for all the digital layouts, but to see what different looks I could get around it just using items from the kit.  Although I've done them as digital scrapbook layouts, the same sort of ideas can be used for card fronts (making the different layers digitally apear to be dimensional, rather than having to build up lots of layers on a card means less weight and less hight on a finished card which can help postage costs a lot), or you could have a play and put one or more of your own photos into similar layouts.

Even if you never print off your digital creations, or never even show them to anybody else, the aim of this inspiration post is to show you that if you play with just one digital kit you can get different looks.  And if you do decide to print off your creations and perhaps add a bit of glitter and glaze, you can have fab results.

    Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
    • "Deco Daze Collection - Page Kit" - found - Here - in the shop.
    Consumables:
No Consumables Used - as I've only made these as digital layouts I've not used any consumables this time.

    Equipment:
No Crafting Equipment Used - other than my laptop and the software installed on it.  I used My Craft Studio Elite, but you can have a play with other software such as Serif CraftArtist 2 to get similar results.

These are the layouts I came up with:

Today the method is simple - I just took the papers and elements from the kit into my graphics package and played!  Resizing, layering up, moving around, etc., etc.!

    Inspiration by Gwyneth - August

    Good Morning Everybody!
Hi everybody.  Thank you for popping over to have a look at the crafting inspiration that's on show on The Dragons Den blog.  Today I've gone for a card with a bit of paper piecing on it.

    Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
    • "Uncle Perrys Gift" - found - Here - in the shop.
    • "Blue Harmony Papers" - found - Here - in the shop.
    • "Simply Lovable Collection CD Rom" - found - Here - in the shop.
    Consumables:
3 x 300gsm, Super Smooth white cardstock; 8" square base card; ProMarkers - Prussian
FlexMarker - Blue Grey 3; Wink of Stella Brush Pens - Gold, Purple; Glue Gel; Topsy Turvy blue card; White Gel Pen
    Equipment:
    Scissors; Corner Punches

An angled view of the card showing the little dimension achieved on the card.

A closer look at the Paper Pieced digi stamp.

For this card I printed out some items from the CD-ROM to use as background elements, cutting a strip of one and putting it across the centre as a paper ribbon.  I went over the edges of this paper ribbon and the shaped panel with a ProMarker to make it stand out.  I also punshed two corner paper punches on the background and the blue Topsy Turvy mat to create interlocking corners.  I printed the dragons digi-stamp out three times, once onto plain cardstock, twice more onto paper already printed with two of the blue backgrounds from the blue harmony kit.  I think that these give a bit of a texture to the two dragons, especially Uncle Perry.  I cut out all of these, making the two blues paper piecing pieces for the two dragons.  I used the blue ProMarker to colour some parts of Uncle Perry and the Blue Grey FlexMarker to put in shading around the lines of both the dragons.  The Wink of Stella pens were used to colour in the parsel and the white gel pen to do Uncle Perry's eyes and teeth.  I shaped these and used glue gel to attached the pieces image to the card front.

    Inspiration by Gwyneth - July

    Good Morning Everybody!
I thought it was time I went for a card suitable for a man this time.  I also decided to go "back to basics".

I know I've built up quite a collection of crafting consumables and equipment over the years, but I'm also aware that many are either starting new with cardmaking now, or are not as fortunate to be able to afford to build up a collection of crafting goodies.  So for today's post I decided to use very little to make a simple card, and to show you the steps I took to make it.

I'm sorry that some of the photos are not as good as they should be - I was working in the sitting room and shooting pictures as I was making, so the light was not consistent.

    Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
    • "Coffee Cream Papers" - found - Here - in the shop.
    Consumables:
250gsm Super Smooth white cardstock; Glue; Ribbon

    Equipment:
    Scissors; Ruler; Pencil; Black Pen

This is how I made the card - I chose four of the backgrounds to print out onto white cardstock.  I then collected everything I needed for the project together.

As the backgrounds in this case are square, and I'd printed them as "fit to page", I'd got white edges - I cut these off next, keeping the cut off white strips.
I took the unprinted sheet, used my ruler to find the middle point and put a few marks down the half way point.
I put my ruler down the central line and started folding the card against the ruler edge.  Pressing it against the ruler to give a straight line until it is completely over onto the ruler.
I then removed the ruler and used the back of my scissors to burnish the fold.
I took the darkest of the backgrounds I'd printed and marked it on the back at 1.5", 3" and 4.5" to give me three 1.5" strips.  These were then cut out using my scissors.
I took the other three backgrounds and marked on the back and cut 1" strips out of them, cutting 2 x strips of 1" out of the lightest strip.  I then layed these out on my created card to see how they looked.
I decided that the paper ribbon strip across the middle needed something else, so I took the paper ribbon piece, my ruler and the black pen and drew a wiggly line down either side.  Holding the ruler on the cardstock while drawing the wiggly line stops the pen going all over the panel so helps get a controled wiggly line.
When I put it back on the card I liked the look better.  But the paper ribbon is shorter than the card because there was a white edge when the background was printed out.
It's easy enough to disguise this - just slide the strip to one edge and then, looking at the downward hanging strip, cut the paper ribbon in two and pull apart where the break won't be seen under the downward haning strip.
I then decided that the whole card needed something more so did a wiggly line along each side, again using my ruler to have the control of the line staying where I wanted it just in from the edge.
Now it was time to start sticking.  To get the paper ribbon strip level I put my ruler against the bottom of the card, put a line of glue along the back of both pieces of the paper ribbon, and stuck them in place.
I then put a line of glue along the centre and put down the ribbon, leaving the ends hanging over the edge for the moment.  This required pulling and pushing down hard.
I cut the strips that hung down the card, making the largest 5.5", with the strip on it being a quarter of an inch shorter.  The next strip was three quarters of an inch shorter and the next again three quarters of an inch shorter.  These were stuck down onto the card front, again I only put a thin line of glue down the centre of each strip.
I then got to work at cutting out the greetings panels.  The bottom, mat, layers of both are 1" wide strips of the darkest background, cutting them to size by putting them over the card to see what looked best.  The top white layers being a little over 0.5" deep cut out of the spare, unprinted, area that I'd cut off the background edges at the start - but I didn't stick these down yet.
What I did was take a bit of "waste" cardstock and write out my greeting.  I then held it up to of the white, trimmed, greetings label and roughly centered the wording.  I could then see where I needed to write the greeting on the trimmed piece.
I then did the same for the second greeting. And by writing before sticking, if you are not happy with how your wording looks you can cut another greetings panel strip from the white bits of cardstock and try again. The greeting "Penblwydd Hapus" is Welsh for "Happy Birthday".  Writing your own means that you can make your card in whatever language you want, and being in your writing makes it even more personal.
By the time I'd finished writing and stuck the greetings in place the glue holding the black ribbon had dried so I just finished off by trimming off the ribbon ends at either side of my card.

And here you have my finished card -

    Inspiration by Gwyneth - June

    Good Morning Everybody!
Today's make is a card on the theme of sewing.  Although I've used backing papers behind the coloured in digi-stamp, a similar look could be achieved if you actually used scraps of materials to make the background squares.

    Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
    • "Play Time 1" - found - Here - in the shop.
    • "Blazing Summer Mini Kit" - found - Here - in the shop.
    Consumables:
300gsm, Super Smooth white cardstock;  Glue Gel; ProMarkers; Wink of Stella Brush Pens; Pieces of Lace Ribbon; White Gel Pen; Fine Line Drawing Pen

    Equipment:
Scissors; Hougie Board; Ruler - one with regular holes for piercing down one side

A closer look at the card centre.

An even closer look at the coloured in digi-stamp

The image was printed at a smaller size than provided and coloured in.  I then carefully cut it out and gave it a bit of a shape with my fingers.  I took the backgrounds into one of my graphics packages and shrunk them all down into small squares and made more of each background type.  The page was then printed off.  I cut out each of the panels.  I took the ruller and put it down so that the holes were in from the edge of one of the squares.  I used the black fine pen to put a dot through each hole, before turning the card round and going round the other sides.  I then took the white gel pen and joined between every other dot like a sewing line.  I did the same for all the squares.

I took two of the linen textured cardstock and scored along one at 8".  I folded over the short side and stuck it to the other sheet of the same cardstock.  I then cut off the extra to make an 8" square card.  From the cut off piece I made a square mat to use on the front of the card.  I used the ruler as an edge to lay the squares against on the base card and then used glue gel to put each one in place, giving me wiggle time to get them evenly in place along each of the sides.  I did the same for spacing out some more squares onto the mat.  After the glue had set I used foam tape to put the decorated mat onto the card front using foam tape, trapping two bits of folded lace behind a piece of the foam on the right hand side.  I then put the cut out digi-stamp on the card front with glue gel and put three more squares tumpling off the bottom left.

    Inspiration by Gwyneth - May

    Good Morning Everybody!
Today's make is a card with an illuminated scene that has a battery opperated tea-light inside.  So as not to distract from the illuminated image I've kept the base of the card quite plain. I hope you like it.

    Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
    • "Moonlight Unicorn Sillohette" - found - Here - in the shop.
    Consumables:
300gsm, Super Smooth white cardstock; Gold coloured printable acetate; Black Bazzil Basics cardstock; White Bazzil Basics cardstock; Gold Graph'it Shake; Red Backed double sided tape; Glue Gel

    Equipment:
Brother ScanNcut; Scissors; Hougie Board; Battery operated tea-light.

Closer look at part of creation - the gold edging is very faint - just catching the light with a twinkle rather than being "in your face" distracting from the main image.

The image was printed twice at the same size, once onto white cardstock and once onto gold printable acetate. I then cut the card printed one along the line on the image and also around 1cm outside that - to use as a frame.  I glued this over the acetate one becure cutting the acetate the same size as the frame.  I cut out the base card using my ScanNCut, making an aperture in the front piece the same size as the frame centre of my topper.  I also cut out a star out of white cardstock.  I used my Hougie board to score in from both ends of front and back twice and folded and burnished.  The outside "flaps" of both sides were attached front to back using tape.  I cut the star in half and glued the halves on either side of card "wings".  I finished by going around the outside of the card and the circle using the "Shake" marker.

    Inspiration by Gwyneth - April

    Good Morning Everybody!
There have been some changes around Stamping Dragon land since my last post, and the regular Monday morning posts of "Pick of the Week" have gone - but of course that doesn't mean that you won't see lots of new crafting appearing here on The Dragons Den as inspiration for you - A new series of "Inspiration by ..." posts will be appearing throughout the month where the various Design Team members will have a chance to inspire you with lots of crafted creations made using downloads that are available in the Stamping Dragon Designs store, which you can find -> Here!

As this is my 1st "Inspiration by Gwyneth" post I thought I'd make a 1st Birthday card to show you today.  I've used a mini theme kit as well as a digi-stamp from the store.  I hope you like it.

    Stamping Dragon Designs Item:
    • "Birthday Teddy" - found - Here - in the shop.
    • Baby Dayz Mini Theme - found -> Here - in the shop
    Consumables:
300gsm, Super Smooth white cardstock; ProMarkers and FlexMarker - Satin, March Hare, Cocoa, Buttercup, Green Shoot, Frosted Jade and Dove Grey; Clear Wink of Stella brush pens;1mm deep, double sided, foam tape; 8" square Crafty Bob white card; Silver Plain Peel Off - for cutting out the greeting; Finger-lift tape
    Equipment:
    Brother ScanNcut; Scissors.

Slightly angled view to try and show twinkling added to hat, baloons and round embelishment elements.

Closer look at coloured in image.

The background sheet was printed out and cut with a wavy edge using my ScanNcut machine.  The digi-stamp and other elements used from the kit were taken into one of my graphics packages and re-sized and layed out on an A4 working area before I printed them out and cut.  The digi-stamp was coloured in using my ProMarkers.  I went around the outside of the card and the mat using the Frosted Jade ProMarker before building up my card in the design I wanted.  I finished off by going over the hat, baloons and circular embelishments with the clear Wink of Stella and adding the peel-offs.  "Penblwydd Hapus" is Welsh for "Happy Birthday" and "1af" is "1st".
